Located at 2457 N. 54th Street in Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood, just a short distance from Saint Joseph’s University, Larry’s Steaks is a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s culinary history. Since opening its doors in 1956, Larry’s has become more than just another steak shop—it’s an institution, beloved by locals, athletes, and even presidents.

Larry’s is celebrated as the Home of the Belly Filler, serving up large, satisfying cheesesteaks that have delighted customers for decades. Its inviting interior, with spacious seating and walls adorned with Philadelphia sports memorabilia, adds to its charm. Whether it’s a poster of the 2001 76ers or a nod to Philly sports legends, the décor speaks to its deep ties to the city’s culture.
In 1990, Tony Elebah took ownership of Larry’s Steaks and has carried its legacy forward. Under Elebah’s stewardship, Larry’s became the Official Cheesesteak of the Philadelphia 76ers and a favorite for prominent figures like NBA star Kobe Bryant. Bryant, a Philadelphia native, grew up enjoying Larry’s cheesesteaks and even had them shipped to him in Los Angeles. After Bryant’s tragic death in 2020, Larry’s honored his memory with a heartfelt banner that read, “Goodbye Kobe and Gianna, you will be forever missed.”
Larry’s also gained national recognition in 2017 when the Sixers’ No. 1 draft pick, Markelle Fultz, called it his favorite cheesesteak shop during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. To thank Fultz for the endorsement, Elebah personally delivered cheesesteaks to the rookie at his hotel. Even President Joe Biden has praised Larry’s Steaks during his visits to Philadelphia, solidifying its status as a go-to spot for cheesesteaks.
Though cheesesteaks are its claim to fame, Larry’s offers a broad menu, including pizza and wraps, to cater to its diverse clientele. For decades, it has been a favorite haunt for college students, locals, and travelers alike. The shop’s nostalgic exterior and warm interior have remained largely unchanged, with updates like new tiled floors blending seamlessly into its classic aesthetic.
